Maternity Leave Entitlement in Singapore
Eligible working mothers may receive 16 weeks of Government-Paid Maternity Leave when the child is a Singapore citizen and the applicable eligibility conditions are met.
An employee generally needs to have worked for her employer continuously for at least three months before the child’s birth. Different conditions apply to self-employed mothers.
If the child is not a Singapore citizen, an eligible employee covered by the Employment Act may generally receive 12 weeks of maternity leave after completing at least three months of service. The paid and unpaid portions can depend on the applicable legal conditions and employment contract.
Check the Ministry of Manpower’s maternity-leave eligibility and entitlement guidance before confirming your entitlement.
When Can Maternity Leave Start?
Maternity leave may generally begin up to four weeks before the expected delivery date. The actual start date should be discussed and agreed with the employer.
If the baby is born before the planned leave start date, maternity leave generally begins on the date of birth.
The calculator can help estimate dates, but an expected delivery date may change. Update the calculation after the baby is born and confirm the final dates with your employer.
How Is Maternity Leave Taken?
The standard arrangement is to take maternity leave as one continuous period.
Eligible mothers may be able to take part of the leave flexibly when both the employee and employer agree. Flexible leave is subject to applicable rules and time limits, so the arrangement should be confirmed in writing.
Read MOM’s official guidance on planning maternity leave for current information.
Is Maternity Leave Paid?
Maternity-leave payment depends on the mother’s eligibility, employment arrangement, child’s citizenship and applicable scheme.
Government-paid maternity leave does not mean that every mother automatically receives the same payment. Employer-paid and government-reimbursed portions may differ according to the circumstances.
Confirm payment details with your employer and check the latest MOM rules before relying on an estimated amount.
