Singapore HPB’s school-age BMI-for-age reference used here covers ages 6–18. Enter the child’s completed age in whole years.
Disclaimer: This is a screening estimate, not a diagnosis. Children’s growth should be assessed over time; if you are concerned about a child’s growth or weight, consult a doctor or other qualified healthcare professional.
What Is a BMI Calculator for Kids?
A BMI Calculator for Kids calculates a child’s Body Mass Index from height and weight.
It then compares the BMI with a Singapore age- and sex-specific reference band. This is necessary because children’s bodies change as they grow.
The calculator is designed for boys and girls aged 6–18. It displays:
- BMI in kg/m²;
- BMI-for-age status;
- Singapore HPB reference band;
- formula used; and
- calculation breakdown.
The result is a screening estimate, not a diagnosis. A single BMI result cannot show whether a child is growing normally or has a medical condition.
How to Use the Kids’ BMI Calculator
1. Select the Child’s Sex
Choose boy or girl.
The BMI formula itself is the same. However, the result is compared with a different reference table because growth and body composition patterns can differ between boys and girls.
2. Enter the Child’s Completed Age
Enter a whole-number age from 6 to 18.
Use completed years. For example, This calculator uses completed whole years to provide a simplified screening estimate. An official assessment may use the child’s more precise age, growth history and additional health information.
For users outside this age range, the calculator will show an error. A healthcare professional should use an appropriate growth reference for younger children.
The BMI Calculator Singapore uses adult Singapore BMI categories. Adult cut-offs should not be applied directly to children because child BMI must be interpreted according to age and sex.
3. Enter the Child’s Weight
Enter weight in kilograms.
The calculator accepts values from 10 to 200 kg. Use a recent measurement taken on a suitable scale.
Heavy clothing, shoes or items held by the child can affect the measurement.
4. Enter the Child’s Height
Enter height in centimetres.
The accepted range is 80 to 220 cm. Measure the child standing upright without shoes, with the head level and heels against a flat surface where possible.
The BMI Calculator KG performs a more general metric BMI calculation. This kids’ calculator is different because it adds age- and sex-specific interpretation.
Formula Used by the Calculator
The BMI formula is:
BMI = Weight in kilograms ÷ Height in metres²
Height must first be converted from centimetres to metres:
Height in metres = Height in centimetres ÷ 100
The calculator rounds the displayed BMI to one decimal place.
After calculating BMI, it checks the applicable Singapore reference values for the selected sex and completed age.
Kids’ BMI Calculation Example
Suppose a 10-year-old boy has:
- Weight: 35 kg
- Height: 140 cm
Convert height to metres:
140 ÷ 100 = 1.40 m
Square the height:
1.40 × 1.40 = 1.96
Calculate BMI:
35 ÷ 1.96 = 17.86 kg/m²
The calculator displays the BMI as:
17.9 kg/m²
For a 10-year-old boy, this value falls within the calculator’s acceptable-weight reference band.
The result should still be considered alongside the child’s earlier measurements, growth pattern and professional assessment.
Singapore BMI-for-Age Categories
Singapore’s HealthHub explains that children’s BMI should be compared with children of the same age and sex.
The calculator uses these reference categories:
- Below the 3rd percentile: Severely Underweight
- 3rd to below the 5th percentile: Underweight
- 5th to below the 90th percentile: Acceptable Weight
- 90th to below the 97th percentile: Overweight
- 97th percentile or above: Severely Overweight
A percentile band shows a child’s relative position within the reference population. It does not mean that the same percentage of the child’s body is fat.
Why Child BMI Is Different From Adult BMI
Adult BMI normally uses fixed cut-offs. Child BMI interpretation changes with age and sex because children are still growing.
The BMI Calculator with Age performs a separate calculation. Do not assume that every calculator containing an age field uses Singapore child BMI-for-age reference bands.
The BMI Calculator Male Singapore is intended for adult men. Its adult interpretation is not suitable for a school-age boy.
Similarly, the BMI Calculator for Females Singapore uses an adult BMI approach. A school-age girl should be assessed using child-specific age and sex references.
What the Calculator Cannot Determine
The calculator cannot determine:
- exact body-fat percentage;
- muscle mass;
- bone structure;
- whether growth is healthy;
- nutritional quality;
- the cause of a low or high BMI;
- future height or weight;
- puberty stage;
- a medical diagnosis; or
- whether treatment is required.
BMI may be affected by growth spurts, puberty and muscular development. Healthcare professionals may also review growth history, family history, diet, activity and other measurements.
A child should not begin a restrictive diet based only on this result.
BMI and Other Health Calculators
The Calorie Calculator Singapore is intended for adults aged 18 and above. It should not be used to prescribe a calorie deficit for a growing child.
The EDD Calculator Singapore estimates a pregnancy due date from the last menstrual period. It does not predict a child’s later growth, height, weight or BMI.
The IPPT Calculator adds official fitness-test station points. It does not measure a child’s health, fitness or suitability for physical activity.
Other Singapore-focused tools are available through the Calculator Singapores homepage, but each tool should be interpreted only for its stated purpose.
When to Seek Professional Advice
Speak with a doctor or another qualified healthcare professional if:
- the child is losing weight unexpectedly;
- weight changes rapidly;
- growth appears to have stopped;
- the result is underweight or severely underweight;
- the result is overweight or severely overweight;
- eating causes stress or fear;
- there are concerns about puberty or development; or
- the family is considering major diet changes.
Avoid labelling or blaming a child because of a BMI category. Discussions about growth and weight should be supportive and age-appropriate.
Common Kids’ BMI Mistakes
Do not use adult BMI cut-offs for a child.
Enter the child’s completed age, not the next birthday age.
Convert height correctly. The calculator requires centimetres, not metres, feet or inches.
Enter weight in kilograms, not pounds.
Do not treat one measurement as a complete growth assessment. Changes over time may be more useful than a single result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What ages does this calculator support?
A: It supports children aged 6–18 using completed years.
Q2: Is the BMI formula different for children?
A: The basic formula is the same. The difference is that the result is interpreted using age- and sex-specific reference bands.
Q3: Why must I select boy or girl?
A: The Singapore reference values differ because growth and body-composition patterns can vary by sex.
Q4: What does acceptable weight mean?
A: It means the calculated BMI falls within the 5th to below the 90th percentile reference band for the selected age and sex.
Q5: Does a high BMI prove that a child has excess body fat?
A: No. BMI does not directly measure body fat, muscle or bone structure.
Q6: Can this calculator prescribe a diet?
A: No. Children’s nutrition and weight-management decisions should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
Q7: Is the result a medical diagnosis?
A: No. It is a screening estimate based on the entered measurements and Singapore BMI-for-age reference values.
