This calculator uses adult Asian BMI screening ranges and is intended for people aged 18 and above.
Disclaimer: BMI is a screening tool for adults; results may be less suitable for children, pregnancy, very muscular people or certain health conditions.
What Is a BMI Calculator Singapore?
A BMI Calculator Singapore calculates an adult’s Body Mass Index using age, height and weight.
The calculator displays:
- BMI rounded to one decimal place;
- Singapore/Asian adult screening range; and
- healthy weight range for the entered height.
You can use kilograms and centimetres or pounds, feet and inches.
BMI is a screening measurement. It cannot diagnose a health condition or directly measure body fat, muscle mass, fitness or fat distribution.
BMI also does not calculate daily energy needs. The Calorie Calculator Singapore performs that separate calculation using age, sex, height, weight, activity and the selected goal.
How to Use the BMI Calculator
1. Select the Unit System
Choose Metric or Imperial.
Metric mode requires:
- weight in kilograms; and
- height in centimetres.
Imperial mode requires:
- weight in pounds;
- height in complete feet; and
- remaining height in inches.
Do not mix measurements from different systems. The BMI Calculator KG is available if you only want to enter kilograms and centimetres.
2. Enter Your Age
Enter your age in completed years.
This calculator is intended for adults aged 18 and above. Age confirms that the adult screening ranges are suitable for use.
Age does not change the standard adult BMI formula or category. The BMI Calculator With Age explains how adult and child interpretation differs even though the underlying height-and-weight formula remains the same.
3. Enter Your Weight
Enter your current weight in the unit selected.
Use kilograms in metric mode or pounds in imperial mode. A recent measurement taken on a reliable scale will provide a more useful estimate.
Weight can change slightly during the day because of clothing, meals and hydration. Use similar measurement conditions if comparing results over time.
4. Enter Your Height
Enter height in centimetres when using metric mode.
In imperial mode, enter complete feet and the remaining inches separately. For example, enter 5 feet and 7 inches rather than entering 5.7 feet.
Measure height without shoes where practical. Height is squared in the BMI formula, so an incorrect height can noticeably change the result.
Select Calculate BMI to see the results. Use Reset to clear the fields.
BMI Formula Used
For metric measurements, the calculator uses:
BMI = Weight in kilograms ÷ Height in metres²
Height entered in centimetres is first converted into metres:
Height in metres = Height in centimetres ÷ 100
For imperial measurements, pounds, feet and inches are converted before the same standard calculation is applied.
An equivalent imperial formula is:
BMI = Weight in pounds ÷ Height in inches² × 703
The formula is the same for adult men and women. The BMI Calculator Male Singapore provides male-focused guidance, but it does not use a special male equation.
The BMI Calculator for Females Singapore also uses the standard formula while explaining limitations relevant to adult women.
BMI Calculation Example
Suppose a 35-year-old adult enters:
- weight: 65 kg;
- height: 170 cm;
- unit system: Metric.
Convert height into metres:
170 ÷ 100 = 1.70 m
Square the height:
1.70 × 1.70 = 2.89 m²
Calculate BMI:
65 ÷ 2.89 = 22.49
The calculator displays a BMI of approximately 22.5.
Under the Singapore/Asian ranges, 22.5 falls within the healthy or low health-risk range.
This result does not prove that the person has no health risks. It is a general screening estimate based only on height and weight.
Singapore Adult BMI Ranges
The calculator applies these Singapore/Asian adult ranges:
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 to 22.9: Healthy or low health risk
- 23.0 to 27.4: Moderate health risk
- 27.5 and above: High health risk
The adult formula, screening ranges and important exceptions are explained by HealthHub.
A category indicates a general level of screening risk. It does not confirm that a person has or will develop a medical condition.
A healthcare professional may also consider waist circumference, blood pressure, blood tests, family history, lifestyle and changes in weight over time.
How Is the Healthy Weight Range Calculated?
The calculator estimates the weights that would produce a BMI between 18.5 and 22.9 at the entered height.
The formulas are:
Lower weight = 18.5 × Height in metres²
Upper weight = 22.9 × Height in metres²
For a person who is 1.70 metres tall:
18.5 × 2.89 = 53.5 kg
22.9 × 2.89 = 66.2 kg
The calculator therefore displays a healthy BMI weight range of approximately 53.5 kg to 66.2 kg.
This is a mathematical reference range, not a compulsory weight target. It does not account for muscle mass, pregnancy, medical history or individual body composition.
BMI Is Not a Fitness Score
BMI does not measure strength, stamina or exercise performance.
The IPPT Calculator performs a different calculation using entered push-up, sit-up and 2.4 km run points. A person’s BMI cannot predict an official IPPT result or award.
Someone can have a healthy-range BMI but low fitness. A muscular athlete can also have a higher BMI without having the same body-fat level as another person with that result.
Adult BMI and Children
Do not apply adult BMI ranges to children or teenagers.
Children grow at different rates. Their BMI must be interpreted using age- and sex-specific BMI-for-age references.
The BMI Calculator for Kids is designed for the supported school-age calculation. Parents should seek professional advice if concerned about a child’s growth or weight.
When Is BMI Less Suitable?
BMI may be less informative for:
- pregnant women;
- very muscular people;
- competitive athletes;
- people with significant fluid retention;
- people experiencing unexplained weight changes; or
- people with conditions affecting weight or body composition.
During pregnancy, normal weight changes make standard adult categories less suitable. The EDD Calculator Singapore estimates a due date from the last menstrual period and cycle length, but it does not assess pregnancy weight or maternal health.
BMI cannot distinguish fat from muscle. It also cannot show where body fat is stored.
Speak to a qualified healthcare professional if the result concerns you or if you need advice based on your personal circumstances.
Common BMI Mistakes
Do not enter height in metres when metric mode requests centimetres. Enter 170, not 1.70, for a height of 170 cm.
Do not enter pounds while metric mode is selected. Check the active unit system first.
Do not treat the healthy weight range as an exact personal target. It is calculated only from height and standard BMI limits.
Do not use one BMI result as a complete health assessment. Waist circumference, fitness, lifestyle and medical factors can provide important additional information.
Other Singapore-focused tools are available through the Calculator Singapores homepage, but every calculator has a separate purpose and limitation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What does the BMI Calculator Singapore calculate?
A: It calculates adult BMI from age, height and weight. It also displays the Singapore/Asian screening range and a height-based healthy weight range.
Q2: What is a healthy BMI in Singapore?
A: A BMI from 18.5 to 22.9 is generally considered the healthy or low-risk adult screening range.
Q3: Does age change adult BMI?
A: No. Age confirms that the adult calculator is suitable, but it does not change the formula or adult category.
Q4: Do men and women use different formulas?
A: No. The standard adult BMI formula is the same for men and women.
Q5: Can children use this calculator?
A: No. Children and teenagers require age- and sex-specific BMI-for-age interpretation.
Q6: Does BMI directly measure body fat?
A: No. BMI compares weight with height but cannot distinguish body fat from muscle or measure fat distribution.
Q7: Is the result a medical diagnosis?
A: No. It is a screening estimate and does not replace assessment by a qualified healthcare professional.
