What Is a Car Insurance Calculator Singapore?

A Car Insurance Calculator Singapore helps you apply discounts and additional charges to an annual premium quoted by an insurer.

Start with an actual insurer quote before No-Claim Discount, commonly called NCD. The calculator then applies your selected NCD, any confirmed additional insurer discount and optional policy charges.

It does not generate an insurance quote from your car’s value, age or model. Singapore insurers assess risk individually, so only an insurer can provide a final premium and policy terms.

How to Use the Calculator

Enter the annual premium quoted by your insurer before NCD.

Next, select the private-car NCD confirmed by the insurer. Do not select a higher percentage merely because you expect to qualify.

Enter any other confirmed insurer discount. This discount is applied after NCD.

Finally, add the total cost of confirmed optional benefits or policy extras.

Select Calculate to see:

  • estimated premium after adjustments;
  • estimated NCD saving; and
  • calculation breakdown.

Use Reset before checking another quote.

What Is a No-Claim Discount?

A No-Claim Discount can reduce your renewal premium when no claim has been made under your policy for an eligible period.

A commonly used NCD scale for private-car policies is:

  • one claim-free year: 10%;
  • two claim-free years: 20%;
  • three claim-free years: 30%;
  • four claim-free years: 40%; and
  • five or more claim-free years: 50%.

These are commonly used levels, but your insurer must confirm your actual entitlement.

The General Insurance Association of Singapore explains that NCD is only one factor affecting a motor insurance premium. A quote with a higher NCD is not automatically cheaper than every quote from another insurer.

Formula Used by the Calculator

The calculator applies the entered adjustments in this order:

NCD saving = Quoted premium × NCD percentage

Premium after NCD = Quoted premium − NCD saving

Other discount = Premium after NCD × Other discount percentage

Estimated adjusted premium = Premium after NCD − Other discount + Add-ons or charges

Only enter discounts and charges that the insurer has confirmed.

Car Insurance Calculation Example

Suppose an insurer provides these figures:

  • quoted annual premium before NCD: S$1,800;
  • confirmed NCD: 40%;
  • other confirmed discount: 5%; and
  • policy add-ons: S$120.

First, calculate the NCD saving:

S$1,800 × 40% = S$720

The premium after NCD is:

S$1,800 − S$720 = S$1,080

The additional 5% discount is applied after NCD:

S$1,080 × 5% = S$54

Add the confirmed policy extras:

S$1,080 − S$54 + S$120 = S$1,146

The estimated adjusted annual premium is S$1,146.

This calculation does not replace the insurer’s final quotation. Taxes, administrative charges or adjustments not entered in the calculator may change the amount payable.

What Affects Car Insurance Cost in Singapore?

Insurers may consider several factors when preparing a quote, including:

  • driver’s age and experience;
  • accident and claims history;
  • driving record;
  • vehicle make, model and age;
  • vehicle modifications;
  • private or commercial use;
  • named and unnamed drivers;
  • type of insurance cover;
  • selected excess; and
  • insurer’s own underwriting rules.

The calculator does not evaluate these risks. They should already be reflected in the insurer’s quoted premium.

Motor Insurance Is Required in Singapore

Every vehicle driven on Singapore roads must have valid motor insurance.

The insurance must at least cover third-party liability for death and bodily injury. Valid insurance covering the full road-tax renewal period is also required before road tax can be renewed.

This requirement can be checked through LTA’s official motor insurance guidance.

Compare More Than the Premium

The cheapest premium may not provide the most suitable protection.

Before choosing a policy, compare:

  • coverage and exclusions;
  • policy excess;
  • authorised or preferred workshops;
  • named-driver restrictions;
  • windscreen protection;
  • roadside assistance;
  • loss-of-use benefits;
  • NCD protection;
  • accident-reporting requirements; and
  • cancellation or refund terms.

Read the policy wording and ask the insurer about anything unclear before purchasing.

Check the Vehicle’s Value

Market value can affect the type of protection you want, but this calculator does not calculate a car’s value.

Use the Car Valuation Calculator Singapore to compare current asking prices and relevant vehicle information separately.

For longer-term ownership planning, the Car Depreciation Calculator Singapore can estimate annual and monthly depreciation until the current COE expires.

Include Other Car Ownership Costs

Insurance is only one part of owning a car.

If the vehicle is financed, compare the possible repayments with the Car Loan Calculator Singapore.

An imported vehicle can involve additional registration and tax-related costs. Review these separately with the Singapore Car Import Tax Calculator.

Drivers comparing car ownership with buses and trains can use the Singapore Transport Fare Calculator for a separate public transport estimate.

More Singapore car and finance tools are available through the Calculator Singapores homepage.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do not enter a guessed premium. Obtain a real quotation from an insurer first.

Avoid these other mistakes:

  • selecting an unconfirmed NCD;
  • entering the same discount twice;
  • forgetting confirmed policy charges;
  • comparing policies with different coverage;
  • ignoring the policy excess;
  • failing to declare vehicle modifications;
  • providing incomplete driver information; or
  • treating the calculator result as a final quotation.

Incorrect or incomplete information supplied to an insurer can affect the policy or a future claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Does the calculator generate an insurance quote?

A: No. You must enter an actual annual premium quoted by an insurer before NCD. The calculator only applies the entered discounts and charges.

Q2: Can I use the calculator for a new or used car?

A: Yes, provided you already have an insurer’s quote. The insurer—not the calculator—assesses the vehicle and driver risks.

Q3: What NCD should I select?

A: Select only the NCD confirmed by your current or prospective insurer. Your claims history and insurer’s conditions can affect your entitlement.

Q4: Are add-ons included automatically?

A: No. Enter the total cost of optional benefits or policy extras confirmed by the insurer.

Q5: Does NCD guarantee a cheaper premium?

A: No. Insurers use different pricing models. Compare the final premium, coverage, excess and exclusions rather than NCD alone.

Q6: Can a claim reduce my NCD?

A: It may. The effect depends on the circumstances, your existing NCD and the insurer’s rules. NCD protection may also have separate conditions.

Q7: Is car insurance required before renewing road tax?

A: Yes. LTA states that insurance must cover the vehicle for the entire road-tax renewal period before renewal.

Q8: Is the estimated premium guaranteed?

A: No. It is based on the figures entered. The insurer’s final quotation, underwriting decision and policy terms determine the actual premium.
