GPA Calculator Singapore

Use the GPA Calculator Singapore to calculate an estimated weighted Grade Point Average from your course grades and units or credits.

Select the grading scale that matches your institution, choose a grade for each course and enter its credit value. The calculator will combine the courses and display an estimated GPA.

Singapore universities, polytechnics and other institutions may use different grading systems. Always compare the result with your institution’s official academic rules and transcript.

How to Use the GPA Calculator

Follow these steps:

  1. Select the GPA scale used by your institution.
  2. Choose the letter grade for Course 1.
  3. Enter the units or credits for that course.
  4. Repeat the process for the remaining courses.
  5. Select Add Course if you need more rows.
  6. Use the red remove button to delete an unwanted row.
  7. Select Calculate GPA.
  8. Review the estimated weighted GPA.

Enter only courses that should count towards your GPA. Courses with no assigned grade points may need to be excluded, depending on your institution’s rules.

If you need help checking a multiplication or total separately, use the Online Scientific Calculator.

How Is GPA Calculated?

A weighted GPA gives more importance to courses with more units or credits.

For every course, the calculator multiplies the grade point by the number of course units:

Course points = Grade point × Course units

It then adds all course points and divides them by the total number of units:

GPA = Total course points ÷ Total course units

A course carrying more units has a larger effect on the final result than a course carrying fewer units.

GPA Calculation Example

Suppose a student has these three courses:

  • Course 1: A−, worth 4 units
  • Course 2: B+, worth 4 units
  • Course 3: B, worth 2 units

Using a 5.0 scale where A− is 4.5, B+ is 4.0 and B is 3.5:

Course 1

4.5 × 4 = 18 grade points

Course 2

4.0 × 4 = 16 grade points

Course 3

3.5 × 2 = 7 grade points

The total course points are:

18 + 16 + 7 = 41

The total units are:

4 + 4 + 2 = 10

The estimated GPA is:

41 ÷ 10 = 4.10

This example is for explanation only. Your institution may use different grade values or rules.

Understanding the 5.0 GPA Scale

The calculator includes an NUS/NTU-style 5.0 scale. On the general NUS scale, the grade points include:

  • A+ = 5.0
  • A = 5.0
  • A− = 4.5
  • B+ = 4.0
  • B = 3.5
  • B− = 3.0
  • C+ = 2.5
  • C = 2.0
  • D+ = 1.5
  • D = 1.0
  • F = 0.0

Do not assume this scale applies to every programme or institution. Some faculties, courses and programmes may follow different rules.

You can review the current general system on the official NUS Academic Structure and Grading page.

Units, Credits and Course Weight

A unit or credit represents the weight of a course. The name used for this value depends on the institution.

Enter the official number shown in your course information or academic record. Do not guess the number based only on class hours.

For example, a 4-unit course affects the GPA twice as much as a 2-unit course when both receive different grades.

If every course has the same credit value, each course has equal weight. If course values differ, a simple average of the letter grades will not give the correct weighted GPA.

Which Courses Should Be Included?

Include courses only when they carry grade points and count towards the GPA you want to calculate.

Depending on institutional rules, some courses may not be included, such as:

  • Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory courses
  • Completed Satisfactorily/Completed Unsatisfactorily courses
  • Audit courses
  • Courses with no assigned units
  • Courses with no grade points
  • Exempted courses
  • Certain transferred courses

Rules for repeated, failed, withdrawn or incomplete courses may also differ. Check your institution’s official policy before entering these courses.

Semester GPA and Cumulative GPA

A semester GPA normally uses only courses taken during one semester or term.

A cumulative GPA normally includes all eligible courses counted by the institution across multiple semesters.

You can enter one semester’s courses to estimate a semester GPA. To estimate a cumulative GPA accurately, you need the eligible courses, grades and units from every applicable semester.

Your official transcript remains the final record.

Common GPA Calculation Mistakes

Avoid these common errors:

  • Selecting the wrong GPA scale
  • Entering letter grades from another grading system
  • Treating every course as equally weighted
  • Entering marks instead of grade points
  • Using the wrong course units
  • Including courses that do not count
  • Forgetting an eligible course
  • Confusing semester GPA with cumulative GPA
  • Rounding each course calculation too early

Use full grade-point values during the calculation and round only the final result when appropriate.

Academic performance is separate from immigration assessment. The Singapore PR Points Calculator explains general published PR application factors but does not treat GPA as an official immigration score.

Planning Study and Daily Costs

GPA is only one part of student planning. It does not show tuition fees, living costs, study time or future academic outcomes.

Students managing household expenses can use the Singapore Electricity Calculator to estimate electricity charges separately.

Personal lifestyle and environmental choices are also separate from academic grades. The Carbon Footprint Calculator Singapore provides a general environmental estimate based on daily activities.

Important Disclaimer

This GPA calculator provides a general estimate only. It is not an official calculator from NUS, NTU, a polytechnic, a school or another educational institution.

Grading scales, course rules, exclusions, repeated-course treatment and rounding methods can vary by institution and programme.

Always confirm your official GPA using your academic transcript and institution’s current rules. Do not use this estimate as proof of academic standing, admission eligibility, graduation status or scholarship eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a weighted GPA?

A weighted GPA multiplies each course’s grade point by its units or credits. Courses with more credits have a greater effect on the result.

Is the Singapore GPA scale always out of 5.0?

No. Singapore institutions and programmes may use different grading scales. Choose the scale that matches your institution.

Are A+ and A both worth 5.0 at NUS?

Under the general NUS grading table, A+ and A both carry 5.0 grade points. Some programmes may follow different rules.

Should I include S/U courses?

Include them only if your institution assigns grade points and counts them towards GPA. Many S/U courses are excluded from GPA calculations.

Can I calculate a semester GPA?

Yes. Enter only the eligible courses taken during that semester.

Can I calculate my cumulative GPA?

You can estimate it by entering all eligible courses, grades and units counted by your institution. Your transcript provides the official result.

Why do course credits matter?

Course credits determine the weight of each grade. A course with more credits has a larger effect on the GPA.

Is the calculator result official?

No. It is an estimate. Your educational institution calculates and records your official GPA.
