What Is a Road Tax Calculator Singapore?

A Road Tax Calculator Singapore estimates the road tax payable for a car registered in Singapore.

Depending on the selected vehicle type, the calculation can use:

  • Engine capacity in cubic centimetres
  • Maximum motor power in kilowatts
  • Vehicle age
  • The applicable age surcharge

The calculator shows estimated annual road tax, six-month road tax and any surcharge for a vehicle more than 10 years old.

The result is an estimate. LTA determines the actual amount using the vehicle’s registered specifications, fuel type, age and renewal details.

How to Use the Calculator

Select the vehicle type first.

For a petrol, CNG or diesel car, enter the engine capacity in cc. The ICE-car option estimates the base road tax.

For an electric car, enter the maximum motor power rating in kW. If the vehicle has more than one motor, use the applicable combined maximum power rating.

For a petrol-electric car, enter both engine capacity and motor power where requested.

Finally, enter the vehicle’s age and select Calculate Road Tax.

The result will display:

  • Estimated annual road tax
  • Estimated six-month road tax
  • Age surcharge, where applicable

Use Reset before checking another vehicle.

How Road Tax Is Calculated for Petrol and ICE Cars

For petrol, petrol-CNG, CNG and diesel cars, base road tax is calculated using engine capacity.

The six-month formulas are:

Engine capacity up to 600cc

Six-month road tax = S$200 × 0.782

Above 600cc and up to 1,000cc

Six-month road tax = [S$200 + S$0.125 × (EC − 600)] × 0.782

Above 1,000cc and up to 1,600cc

Six-month road tax = [S$250 + S$0.375 × (EC − 1,000)] × 0.782

Above 1,600cc and up to 3,000cc

Six-month road tax = [S$475 + S$0.75 × (EC − 1,600)] × 0.782

Above 3,000cc

Six-month road tax = [S$1,525 + S$1 × (EC − 3,000)] × 0.782

EC means the car’s engine capacity in cubic centimetres.

Example: Road Tax for a 1,600cc Car

Suppose a petrol car has:

  • Engine capacity: 1,600cc
  • Vehicle age: 5 years

The applicable calculation is:

[S$250 + S$0.375 × (1,600 − 1,000)] × 0.782

[S$250 + S$225] × 0.782

S$475 × 0.782 = S$371.45

Estimated six-month road tax:

S$371.45

Estimated annual road tax:

S$371.45 × 2 = S$742.90

Because the car is not more than 10 years old, no age surcharge is added.

Road Tax for Electric Cars

Electric-car road tax is calculated using the maximum power rating of the vehicle’s motor or motors.

The maximum power rating is measured in kilowatts. For an electric car with multiple motors, the applicable combined maximum power rating should be used.

Electric cars also have an Additional Flat Component because they do not pay fuel excise duty when refuelling. Under the current structure, the six-month AFC is S$350.

The calculator includes the relevant power-based road-tax calculation and flat component when the electric-car option is selected.

Do not enter engine capacity for a fully electric car.

Road Tax for Petrol-Electric Cars

For a petrol-electric car, LTA compares two calculations:

  1. Road tax based on engine capacity
  2. Road tax based on maximum electric motor power

The higher calculated amount becomes the applicable road tax.

This is why entering only the engine capacity may produce an incomplete estimate for a hybrid car.

Check the official vehicle records if you are unsure about its registered motor power.

Diesel-Car Special Tax Is Separate

The petrol, CNG and diesel option in this calculator estimates base road tax only.

A diesel, diesel-CNG or diesel-electric car may also be subject to a separate special tax. The special-tax amount can depend on engine capacity and the vehicle’s emission standard.

Do not treat the calculator’s ICE-car result as the complete amount payable for every diesel vehicle.

LTA’s current vehicle tax structure provides separate special-tax information for diesel vehicles.

Road Tax Surcharge for Cars Over 10 Years Old

A vehicle more than 10 years old pays an age surcharge on top of its original road tax.

The annual surcharge is:

  • More than 10 years old: 10%
  • More than 11 years old: 20%
  • More than 12 years old: 30%
  • More than 13 years old: 40%
  • More than 14 years old: 50%

The surcharge is capped at 50%.

It is an additional charge, not an age-based discount.

For example, if the original annual road tax is S$742.90 and the applicable surcharge is 10%:

Age surcharge = S$742.90 × 10% = S$74.29

Estimated annual total = S$742.90 + S$74.29 = S$817.19

What the Estimate Does Not Include

The result does not include:

  • Diesel special tax where applicable
  • Late-renewal fees
  • Outstanding fines
  • Vehicle-inspection fees
  • Motor-insurance premiums
  • ERP charges
  • Parking or fuel expenses
  • COE renewal cost
  • Off-Peak Car adjustments
  • Vehicle-specific exemptions

Use the official payable amount shown by LTA when renewing your road tax.

Requirements Before Renewing Road Tax

Road tax can generally be renewed for six or twelve months.

Before renewal, the vehicle must:

  • Have valid insurance for the complete road-tax period
  • Pass its required inspection, if due
  • Have no outstanding fines or warrants preventing renewal
  • Meet any additional vehicle-specific conditions

Complete the prerequisites before the expiry date. Late renewal can result in additional fees and penalties.

Comparing Road Tax With Other Driving Costs

Road tax is a recurring ownership cost. It is different from charges paid for using particular roads.

The ERP Calculator Singapore can estimate the total of current ERP gantry charges entered for a route. ERP charges are not included in road tax.

Journey distance can also affect fuel and running costs. Use the Distance Calculator Singapore to estimate distance separately.

These tools and other Singapore-focused calculators are available through Calculator Singapores.

Comparing Car Use With Other Transport

Owning a car involves road tax, insurance, fuel, parking and maintenance.

Before deciding whether to drive, compare the journey with the Grab Fare Calculator Singapore. Grab pricing can change according to distance, demand, time and booking conditions.

For public transport, the Singapore Transport Fare Calculator provides a broader estimate across supported services.

Passengers making a bus journey can use the Singapore Bus Fare Calculator for a more focused fare estimate.

These comparisons will not change the road tax payable, but they can help you understand the wider cost of regular travel.

Why the Actual Road Tax May Differ

Your final LTA road tax may differ because:

  • The wrong vehicle type was selected.
  • Engine capacity was entered incorrectly.
  • Motor power was entered incorrectly.
  • Multiple-motor power was not combined correctly.
  • The vehicle’s age was entered incorrectly.
  • A diesel special tax applies.
  • An Off-Peak Car adjustment applies.
  • Vehicle records contain different registered specifications.
  • Late fees or other charges apply.

Use the calculator for planning and confirm the final amount through OneMotoring.
