What Is a Car Loan Calculator Singapore?

A Car Loan Calculator Singapore estimates the monthly instalment and total interest for a vehicle loan.

Enter the car price, down-payment percentage, loan tenure and quoted flat interest rate. The calculator then shows the estimated loan amount, total interest and monthly repayment.

The result is a planning estimate. It does not confirm loan approval or the maximum amount you can borrow.

How to Use the Car Loan Calculator

Enter the full purchase price of the car.

If you are unsure whether the asking price is reasonable, compare similar vehicles with the Car Valuation Calculator Singapore before calculating the loan.

Next, enter the down payment as a percentage of the purchase price. Check that the selected percentage complies with the applicable financing limit.

Enter the loan tenure in years. This calculator accepts a maximum tenure of seven years.

Finally, enter the annual flat interest rate quoted by the lender and select Calculate.

Use Reset before checking another loan offer.

Car Loan Formula Used

Car loans in Singapore commonly advertise a flat interest rate.

The calculator uses these formulas:

Down payment = Car price × Down-payment percentage

Loan amount = Car price − Down payment

Total interest = Loan amount × Flat interest rate × Loan tenure

Total repayment = Loan amount + Total interest

Monthly instalment = Total repayment ÷ Number of loan months

The number of loan months is the loan tenure multiplied by 12.

Car Loan Calculation Example

Suppose you are considering a car with these details:

  • car price: S$120,000;
  • down payment: 40%;
  • loan tenure: five years; and
  • flat interest rate: 2.5% per year.

First, calculate the down payment:

S$120,000 × 40% = S$48,000

The estimated loan amount is:

S$120,000 − S$48,000 = S$72,000

Total flat-rate interest is:

S$72,000 × 2.5% × 5 = S$9,000

The total estimated repayment is:

S$72,000 + S$9,000 = S$81,000

There are 60 monthly payments:

S$81,000 ÷ 60 = S$1,350

The estimated monthly instalment is S$1,350.

This example excludes processing fees, late-payment charges and insurance. After receiving an actual insurer quote, use the Car Insurance Calculator Singapore to apply your confirmed NCD, discounts and policy extras separately.

Singapore Car Loan Limits

Motor-vehicle financing from regulated financial institutions is generally subject to loan-to-value and tenure limits.

The maximum loan commonly depends on the car’s Open Market Value, or OMV:

  • OMV of S$20,000 or less: up to 70% financing;
  • OMV above S$20,000: up to 60% financing; and
  • maximum loan tenure: seven years.

This generally means a down payment of at least 30% or 40%, depending on the applicable OMV band.

The car’s OMV is not the same as its retail price or current market value. Your lender may approve a lower amount after assessing your income, existing debts, credit history and the vehicle.

Flat Rate Versus Effective Interest Rate

A flat interest rate calculates interest using the original loan amount for the entire tenure.

The outstanding balance reduces as you make payments, but the flat-rate calculation continues to use the original principal.

Because of this, a quoted flat rate is not directly equal to the effective interest rate.

When comparing offers, ask each lender for:

  • monthly instalment;
  • total interest;
  • total repayment;
  • effective interest rate;
  • processing fees; and
  • early-settlement conditions.

Compare the complete cost rather than choosing a loan only because its advertised flat rate appears lower.

Choosing a Down Payment

A larger down payment reduces the amount borrowed.

This normally lowers the total flat-rate interest and monthly instalment. However, it also requires more cash at the start.

Choose an amount that leaves enough savings for insurance, road tax, maintenance and depreciation. The Car Depreciation Calculator Singapore can estimate the annual and monthly loss in value separately.

A maximum financing limit is not a recommended borrowing target. Borrow only what fits comfortably within your budget.

Imported Cars and Additional Costs

Importing a vehicle can involve duties, GST, registration expenses and other charges.

Review these costs separately with the Singapore Car Import Tax Calculator before deciding how much you may need to finance.

Do not assume every import-related expense can be included in the vehicle loan. Confirm the permitted financing amount and required down payment with the lender.

Compare Car Ownership With Public Transport

A monthly instalment is only one part of the cost of owning a car.

Car owners may also pay for insurance, road tax, fuel, maintenance, parking and ERP charges.

If you are comparing car ownership with buses and trains, the Singapore Transport Fare Calculator can provide a separate public transport fare estimate.

Common Car Loan Mistakes

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • entering the advertised price without checking additional charges;
  • confusing the purchase price with OMV;
  • using a down payment that may not meet financing rules;
  • comparing only the flat interest rate;
  • selecting the longest tenure without checking total interest;
  • ignoring processing or early-settlement fees;
  • forgetting insurance and ownership expenses; or
  • treating a calculator estimate as loan approval.

Request a written repayment breakdown before accepting an offer.
